350+ Word Of The Year Ideas

Tired of New Years Resolutions? Why not try a Word of the Year instead?

You’re not the only one who’s over setting big goals only to fall off track by January 14th.

It’s definitely a great thing to know what you want! However, the problem with resolutions is that people tend to go too big or make too many. They have to rely on motivation to get going and keep going. Or they have to be 100% perfect at it or else call themselves a failure.

Not to mention, the darkness of January just isn’t a time when we’re feeling energetic! (If you live in the northern hemisphere that is.)

So rest assured, the reason why your New Year’s resolutions could never stick in the past isn’t a negative reflection of you. It doesn’t mean you’re lazy or stupid or whatever.

It just means that maybe you need a whole new approach.

Enter: The Word of the Year

What Is A Word Of The Year?

What if, instead of laundry list of perfectionist goals, you picked a theme or word instead?

A word of the year is exactly that: a word or theme that you can use to help guide and inspire you for the year ahead.

Word Of The Year Success Story

For a few years my word was (Being) Seen. In case you didn’t know, there were a few years on this blog when I didn’t even show my own face! I’ve come a long way since then and part of that is due to that particular Word of the Year.

Why Use A Word of The Year Instead of A Resolution?

A word of the year is a kinder, more gentle approach to self-improvement. If you pick the right word, it’s a simple way to create total clarity in your life around almost everything. When you know what’s truly important, it’s easier to make the right choices and will keep you on track for what you really want. (And that’s priceless!)

Of course, there’s also no rule that you can’t do BOTH resolutions and a word of the year, so you do you, boo!

Word of The Year Journal Prompts

Sometimes it’s very easy to come up with a word of the year to choose. Think about these journal prompts to help you find the perfect theme for your next year.

  • What do you want more of?
  • What do you want less of? (Then think of a positive word to help.)
  • What would change the game for you in money, love, success, etc.?
  • Looking back over the last year (or longer), what’s something you want to improve or do differently?

  • Think about an area of your life that isn’t so great. If you could give yourself ONE word to reflect on to help you fix it, what would that be?

Any word that makes you feel excited, expansive, calm, or maybe even a little bit scared is a great choice!

Still feel stuck for inspiration? No problem! Just check out the list of 350+ words below to help you find the perfect choice.
