4 Key Questions To Create Total Alignment

As you’ve probably guessed by the title of this site, I’m particularly obsessed with the concept of alignment. If anything in your life is falling out of line, thinking in terms of alignment is a wonderful way to get back on track.

My definition of alignment is that magical state where your thoughts, feelings, beliefs and words line up with your goals. Basically, it’s the art of getting out of your own way. When you achieve this, your entire world becomes the magical state of flow.

When you can hone in on unhelpful thoughts and replace them with beliefs that serve you, you make your life so much easier.

But all too often modern life can be exhausting. We get our attention pulled in a million different directions throughout the day, which doesn’t exactly support our alignment goals.

Maybe this seems familiar:


Eat well, exercise, meditate, be mindful, do your job (well), make money (lots of it), be an awesome wife/boyfriend/friend/daughter. Etc.

Sometimes it feels like you spend more time thinking about what you need to do than actually doing it. We’re forever feeling guilty about not doing something (or not doing it well) and promising ourselves we’ll do better next time. But this is exhausting.

We’re stuck feeling like we’re struggling and never actually fulfilling our real potential.

All those different interests of yours are important of course! But without alignment, they end up competing with each other. They pull you in drastically different directions and sometimes need you to be different for each circumstance.

For example, we let often strive to be spiritual in our personal life. But we often drop those principles entirely when it comes to the worlds of work and money. We couldn’t possibly be our true (loving) selves in these arenas–we’d be taken advantage of or seen as weak.

We all want the best for our lives and we set the bar pretty high for ourselves. And while there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with wanting more, embracing different personas for different parts of our lives is running us ragged.

So if trying do our best isn’t working, then what can we actually do?

The answer is not doing way less. It’s not forgetting about some goals altogether.

Instead, it’s simply about changing our mindset–which then in turn changes up our results.

Our time and attention are two very real limitations. So when you turn your attention to improving your relationship, maybe your health begins to suffer. When you turn your attention to your job, then your relationship starts getting rocky.

This seems to suggest an inherent problem: we can’t pay attention to everything equally all the time. Or can we?

Instead of applying different principles to different areas, what if we just lived by one set of rules? No more head scratching over doing the right thing. No more forgetting about one thing to concentrate on another. Just pure flow and movement with purpose.

Sounds pretty good right?

Honestly, it’s a pretty obvious answer. Yet few of us actually do this in real life! We’ve been taught to think and behave in so many different ways, we think compartmentalization is just normal and natural–even though it’s secretly running us ragged.

Nothing is separate. All those different areas of our life are much more connected than we think! When one area improves, you can more easily shift that improvement to another area as well. So it’s time to stop trying to achieve artificial balance and to create harmony instead.

Harmony between the seemingly different priorities and activities in your life is actual alignment in practice. It’s hard to feel aligned if you’re constantly dropping the ball in one area or another. Instead, improving one area gradually leads to improvements to all areas.

In practical terms, alignment comes constantly assessing where your attention and energy are needed. You can’t achieve alignment on autopilot! This is going to shift and change obviously so you have to become vigilant about staying on target.

Here are four questions that can help you get there. (You’ll know you’re on the path to alignment when the answer for each one is the same!)


4 Key Questions To Create Total Alignment


Alignment Question #1:

What do you want to do?


This question is all about honoring your desire. Yes, what you actually want to do is important–and it might be a lot different than what you’re supposed to do! So tune into yourself and ask your heart: in this moment, what’s piquing your interest? What direction makes you feel excited! This is always important information to be aware of.


Alignment Question #2:

What can you do?



Our ability will shift and change over time. Sometimes you have the energy to run a 5km run before breakfast and other times that same run will feel interminable! Some days you’ll have more free time than others. So don’t rely on what’s worked for you in the past. Assess where you are and focus on what you can do right now.


Alignment Question #3:

What should you do?



Should is definitely not one of my favorite words! It’s usually packed with judgment and maybe even some subtle manipulation. But we do have to consider the priorities of other people when it comes to relationships and career.

However, don’t let that overshadow your own should’s! Our own should’s often include things we know we want to do and have been putting off. But if you’re ready to make changes in your life, then it’s also time to stop just thinking about it and start doing. Pay attention to this one if there’s something that really needs to shift for you.


Alignment Question #4:

What must you do?



Some tasks eventually turn into top priorities. So always ask yourself: what do I absolutely have to do? This isn’t about just doing the bare minimum. Rather, it’s about prioritizing. We can so easily get distracted by things that aren’t even close to our “must do’s”. For example, if you open your inbox first thing in the morning, I can almost guarantee that this has happened to you! Spending the day fixing minor fires often leaves little time left over to focus on what’s most important for you.





When all else fails, go back to prioritizing love above all else. Instead of treating everything differently, begin to hone in on the most loving choice. When you’re in a state of loving yourself, what’s the right move? When you feel love towards other, what do you feel inspired to do? When you feel loving towards your work (or bank account) what attracts you the most? We vastly underestimate the power of love when it comes to the mechanics of our life but all fear and stress is really just an illusion! The loving choice will always be the powerful choice in the end.




I hope this post inspires you to think about alignment in a new light! We all have the power to go through life with flow and ease–which in turn makes you magnetic to the things you want so much in life. There is real magic and power here so please enjoy with care!

As you may have guessed from the title of this blog, alignment is something I take very seriously!

Just to recap, for me the definition of alignment is when your thoughts, feelings, words and actions are all aligned for one common goal.

Being in alignment is the ultimate in self-actualization. It means you’ve mastered the art of getting out of your own way.

It’s a powerful and magical place to be.

And as an extra bonus, when you’re in complete alignment, you also become a natural manifestor— or a super attractor! You enter a flow state where everything you want just seems to happen naturally for you. (Mostly because you’re not screwing it up for yourself!)

So if alignment is our ultimate goal, it also brings up another important question:

How do I know if I’m in alignment?

And that’s a particularly tricky question to answer. After all, there’s no alignment reader that can give us our exact results!


The only way to figure out if we’re in alignment is to pay close attention to what we’re thinking, feeling, saying and doing–and to be really HONEST about it.



Because if you’re not really being honest with yourself, what’s the point of putting in all this effort? Of course, it can be scary to admit where we’ve gone off-track. It can be sobering to figure out what has gone wrong.

But if you really want to create the life of your dreams, you’ll have to put in that work.

So I hope you’re ready to dive into this very important component of self-work! Let’s get started:


How To Get Into Alignment: A Step-by-Step Guide

There are actually 5 components to alignment: desire, thoughts, feelings, words and actions.


How To Get Into Alignment Step #1:

Your Desires



Your desires are important to your individual journey. They’re a large part of what propels us through life! They’re also part of what makes you uniquely you.

We’re simply not all meant to want the same things! And fortunately, there’s so much more than the suburban house and white picket fence to choose from in life!

But our desires can come from somewhere other than us. Sometimes they’re learned from the household we grew up in and sometimes we pick them up from the media. And other times, our goals used to suit us but–unbeknownst to us–we’ve since outgrown them.

So it’s crucial to regularly do some dream work and question your goals. We need to make sure your desires are worthy of YOU, that they haven’t come from somewhere else and that–most importantly–they still light you up.

So if you’re not sure, it’s time to set aside a little time to do some work. Simply ask yourself what would your life look like if you could have ANYTHING you wanted? Start from there and see what wonderful options you can come up with.

And PS-you can never daydream too much! Daydreaming unlocks our imagination and allows us to figure out what we’re being currently drawn to.

How To Get Into Alignment Step #2:

Your Thoughts



This is the easiest problem to troubleshoot! There’s not usually a disconnect between our thoughts and feelings. That’s because our feelings arise from our thoughts. We’re usually very aware of when our thoughts have gone off track because we’re also not feeling good! So thoughts and feelings are typically two sides of the same coin.


How To Get Into Alignment Step #3:

Your Feelings

Your feelings are one of the best indications that you’ve gotten out of alignment. You know that nagging feeling in the back of your mind that something is off? Yup. It’s time to listen in and see what else it has to say!

Most people go through life as slaves to their own emotions. They don’t realize that emotions are the result of our thoughts. So if you want to feel better, then you just need to work on creating a different thought.

Our feelings are just our internal barometer. So if you feel weird or bored or uninspired, it’s time to figure out where that’s really coming from. All of our feelings are here to show us something important.

We’re all pretty darn good at fooling ourselves into thinking “everything’s fine!” when we don’t want to face the truth! But that little nagging feeling isn’t going away unless YOU take action and change what needs to change. The faster you can course-correct, the faster you’re going to get to your ultimate goal.

How To Get Into Alignment Step #4:

Your Words



Since I became a student of personal development and spirituality, I have found myself completely amazed by the vocabulary of the people around me. I can figure out so much about someone’s internal state just from the words they use to describe themselves and the world around them.

However, it’s always a smidge more difficult to notice our own vocabulary! But with a little effort and attention, you’ll soon start to notice some of your key patterns and phrases.

Do you keep talking about things that you don’t ever do? Do you try to present yourself in a way that doesn’t really align with who you are? If so, then you’re creating a layer of internal conflict.

You might not think your words matter but they have a huge impact on your world! You might be able to fool a friend or two with your grandiose talk but deep down inside you’ll always know your own truth. The more time you spend talking about things and not doing them, the less confidence you’ll have in yourself. And that extends out to literally everything else in your life, in addition to the one problem area that you’re trying to cover up.

So it’s time to try being authentic. Be true to your word. Express your truth in the best way you can. You are a powerful person and you deserve to believe in the words you speak! You deserve to believe in you.


How To Get Into Alignment Step #5:

Your Actions



The final piece of the alignment puzzle is to notice our actions. You can desire something, feel good and talk about it positively. But if you don’t ever actually do anything to bring you closer to that goal, it’s still not quite enough!

That’s not to say you have run out and hustle every day! But if there’s an element that’s missing in your life, how can you start preparing for that?(Mentally/physically etc.?)For example, say you're looking to call in a new romantic partner. You could get ready by clearing out half of your dresser or closet in order to physically make that intention real!It's important to realize that realizing any goal requires a journey of change. Part of acquiring your new goal is becoming the kind of person that would have that thing already! You need to put the work into changing your schedule, home, friend group or hobbies to reflect that.

So get creative with it. There are always lots of ways you can create actions that align with your intentions!

I know this might seem like a lot of work at first! But you’re important. And your DREAMS are important. Getting into alignment is the best way to get you there so don’t be afraid! Dive in, do the work and watch just how magical your life becomes.

Never Be Late Again! How To Control Time

What would it be like to never be late again?

That’s quite a concept, right?

And you might be wondering how a personal development blog would have to do with something as “solid” as time.

But just as you can use your mind to control everything else in your life (love, money, success) you can use your mind to control time.

You can become a time expander!

Or you can just keep “running out of time”, as you always have been.

Warning: this is a life-changing concept so if you’re not ready, stop reading right now!


How I Learned How To Control Time

While I loved the book The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks, most of the glory goes to his concept of the Upper Limit Problem. But there’s an equally life-changing chapter in the book that’s all about TIME.

You don’t have to be a slave to the clock. Imagine getting everything done in a day that you need to.

Sounds pretty crazy at first, right? But that’s only because the way you’ve been taught to think about time is all WRONG.

If you want to take conscious control of your life, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to take back control of your time.

That means more than swapping out Netflix binges for books.

(Although that never hurts!)

It’s time to choose Einstein Time instead of Newtonian Time.


Einstein Time vs. Newtonian Time

Newtonian Time forces us to either have too much time or not enough time. Time is always bossing us around and we have little control over it. It’s not good for our sanity, work and even our health.

Einstein Time simply means that we understand that WE control time, not the other way around. Time doesn’t exist outside of us. It’s personal and we’re all experiencing time at different rates.

That also means that if you need more time, all you need to do is create a little more of it.

In order to experience time differently, we just need to start thinking about it differently.

Since space and time are related, to gain more time, we simply need to learn how to occupy space in a different way.

(Stick with me now!)

Once you’re open to this new time concept, you can probably think of a million examples of how this works in reality. Just think about how time can seem to stretch depending on what you’re doing:

Spend an hour doing something you really LOVE? Boom! Time passes in a flash.

Spend an hour hammering your thumb against a wall? Then suddenly that exact same length of time seems INCREDIBLY long.

That’s because you’re spending most of that time OUTSIDE of your body.

This concept comes back to alignment: when you’re in a happy mindset, you occupy ALL space at the same time. You’re not waiting for the “right moment”; you’re LIVING the right moment. You’re not trying to get somewhere else. You’re UNIFIED with the moment.

Conversely, when something unpleasant is happening, you cannot wait for it to be over. You start looking around for the next thing. Time seems to stretch on FOREVER mostly because you are separate from the moment and the world around you.

That’s really all Einstein Time means in a nutshell! But if you REALLY want to control time you’re going to have to take some solid action and start applying the principles to your life.

So here’s a handy guide to help you start gaining control of your life by learning how to control time.


How To Control Time


How To Control Time Principle #1:

Nuke Your Time Persona



When it comes to time, people fall into two categories: Time Cops or Time Slackers. I’m willing to bet you know EXACTLY which category you fall into without me even explaining them!

But just to be clear, here they are:


Time Cops: constantly chastising those around them for not adhering to the rules (“being on time”).

Time Slackers: always ignoring the parameters of time (mostly by being late or missing deadlines.

Now here’s the trick: right now it doesn’t really matter which time persona you gravitate towards. The only important thing is to understand that you have a time PERSONA. And that persona is not part of you. From now on, you get to remove that persona and try something new instead.

SO when you find yourself falling back into those all-too-familiar roles (“I was only five minutes late!” or “I can’t believe you’re late AGAIN!”) it’s time to snap out of it! Wipe away as much of the time guilt from your mind as you can.


How To Control Time Principle #1:

Take Back Control



The most profound shift in becoming a time controller is to simply start thinking of yourself as one. You simply need to DECIDE that time is your creation! Look in the mirror every morning and PROCLAIM it. Write it down. Make it an affirmation. Whatever you do, the point is that from this very second forward you’re going to act like you’re the boss of time not the other way around.

After you make your declaration, it’s time to put it into practice. Never again will you be running late! If that’s what’s seeming to happen on the outside, then remind yourself that YOU’RE the one in control. Maybe everyone else is late too and so your “late” arrival really won’t make any difference. Don’t be afraid of time! OWN it.


How To Control Time Principle #3:

Switch Your Language



The most profound changes we can make in our lives involve a simple switch in the way we speak. Time is no different! You’ve been trained to use catch phrases that automatically put time in control of your life. So if you want a different result, it’s time to start eliminating those phrases from your vocabulary.

Where did the time go?

There aren’t enough hours in the day.

I don’t have time right now.

I wish I had the time!

Once you start noticing your own vocabulary, you’ll probably be downright SHOCKED at how much time we spend every day complaining about time! So just try to start switching your vocabulary (and your attitude) and see what happens next.

Remember don’t take time. MAKE time!


How To Control Time Principle #4:

Get In Alignment



My most favorite time trick of all is actually NOT mentioned in Hendricks book. But it does relate closely.

If you’ve studied the Law of Attraction for any length of time, you’ll know how important alignment is to getting what you want.

(I certainly do! That’s why I named my blog The Aligned Life.)

This is simply the decision to flow through life instead of struggling. It might not be a tip your college professors gave you but if you had known it back then, trust me, it would have saved you hours of work!

Most of us struggle to push and work HARDER when we’re not in alignment. And that also means
we’ve fallen into Newtownian Time. We’re already thinking about the next thing while we’re trying to get the job done. This a losing scenario! Think about all those times you’ve sat at your desk just willing yourself to try to get something done. It’s frustrating—-and completely unnecessary.

So instead of banging your head against the wall, why don’t you try getting in alignment first? When you’re in the right mindset, your work just flows. You spend 20 minutes doing what you thought would take an hour. Now just imagine how much more productive could you be if you flowed all the time?

Getting in alignment could mean meditating for a few minutes or perhaps journaling (if meditation isn’t your thing). The idea is to spend a few minutes getting on the same wavelength as your work first before you try to bleed water from the stone.

Not only will this bring you the inspiration you need to get started, but it will automatically put you into Einstein Time. You’re one with the Universe, there are no barriers and your work will just begin to magically flow from you.




Controlling time isn’t something out of a sci-fi novel! It’s something you can take action on starting today!
