The 7 Principles of Conscious Design

The 7 Principles of Conscious Design

Conscious Design is what I call the work that I do: integrative interior design that’s goal is to support and nurture the owner. It’s not about being simply beautiful and Pinterest-worthy (although it can be) or abot spending a lot of money. Instead it’s about tailoring a space to the needs and goals of the unique individual living there.

I’m always going on about how important Conscious Design is but I thought it might be helpful to put together some key ideas from my practice into a list. While the practice itself takes time and work, it’s makes things a lot easier to have a reference point to work from. So with ease in mind, here we go:

7 Principles Of Conscious Design

Conscious Design Principle #1: Use Integrity

Make all design choices with integrity. Do your purchases reflect you or where you want to go? Or are they borne out of trend-chasing, boredom or an attempt to keep up with the Joneses? Conscious design isn’t competitive and it should never involve you spending beyond your means.

Conscious Design Principle #2: Support Your Vision

Always incorporate items into your space that support your life goals or themes. These are your token objects: visual signals that remind you of the path in front of you. Use your space as if it were a large vision board.

Conscious Design Principle #3: Practice Graceful Non-attachment

There’s a thin boundary between cherishing and respecting our belongings and becoming ruled by them. When we put too much emotion into physical objects, we set ourselves up with burdens of guilt and disappointment. Not sure which side you’re on? Feel it out by examining your stuff. Feeling overly attached to something feels heavy and dark. Practicing non-attachment feels light and beautiful.

Conscious Design Principle #4: Be Reverent

Always treat your space and belongings with reverence. That means regular cleaning and maintenance along with attention. (This is just as effective as talking to your plants!) Are you giving your belongings the attention they deserve? Or are you ignoring them as they’re locked up in a cupboard or closet? Do you use all the rooms in your home? Or do you spend most of your time in one corner of your sofa? Does your home and your belongings really serve you this way or is it time to switch things up?

Conscious Design Principle #5: Spotlight Your Favorites

Shine a light on what you really love. If you’re a musician, does your home reflect that? If you’re an artist, do you see your art within your space? Design a space that incorporates your passion, even if it’s “only” a hobby.

Conscious Design Principle #6: Design For Your Life

Be realistic about what goes on in your space. Maybe your dining room would serve you better if it was turned into a home office.

Ensure your space works for the way you actually live. It’s not about impressing others; it’s about supporting you.

Conscious Design Principle #7: Don’t Seek Perfection

Your home is always growing to reflect the changes within you. It’s never going to be “done”. Do what you can with what you can and keep paying attention to it. Do this and over time, it will become a bigger and brighter reflection of you.

Just like everything else, your home is an energetic space. But that also means it has massive potential for helping to shape and change the way you feel–and therefore the way you act and the results you create in your life.

In other words, your home can be a tool for manifestation–but only if you know how to use that power! In today’s training, I’m explaining what Conscious Design is and how you can get started using this powerful modality in the comfort of your own home.
